The great Shakespearean scholar and poet J. V. Cunningham used to point out this error constantly. In one of my classes with him he seemed almost ready to tear his hair out. Asked what Macbeth's tragic flaw was, he responded, "he's a son of a bitch."

Although nowadays they are widely used interchangeably, 'mistake' (picking the wrong option) and 'error' (going in the wrong direction) are not the same; they are obviously closely related but there are interesting distinctions and complexities once embodied (now buried) in the language relevant to this topic and worth close examination.
